DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

ABOUT US: 

The Sociology Department was established in June 1968 and initially offered as a minor subject alongside History as the major subject until the academic year 1991-92. Over time, Political Science gained equal importance and is now taught alongside Political science, Economics, and Sociology.

The department has evolved with significant academic reforms:

• The semester system was introduced by Karnataka University, Dharwad in 2005.
• From 2010-11, the college became affiliated with Rani Channamma University, Belagavi.
• In 2020-21, the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) was implemented for B.A. first-semester students under Rani Channamma University.
• From 2021-22, the National Education Policy (NEP) was introduced for B.A. first-semester students, bringing a new academic framework to enhance learning outcomes.

Our department remains committed to academic excellence, critical thinking, and Historical sites awareness, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to engage meaningfully in society.

Objectives

• Understand social behavior: Use sociological concepts to analyze social behavior and reality
• Understand social structures: Define and apply concepts like social structure, socialization, culture, and diversity
• Understand research methods: Understand the role of evidence in sociology, including quantitative and qualitative research methods
• Understand social processes: Apply sociological theories to understand social phenomena
• Understand social change: Develop knowledge about social change and social order
• Understand human behavior: Gain insights into the nature of human behavior and how it's influenced by society
• Understand social issues: Apply sociological concepts to analyze social issues like poverty, racism, sexism, and more

Outcome 

• Understand social issues: Students learn to understand the human behavior, social institutions, and social issues.
• Develop critical thinking skills: Students learn to develop critical thinking skills through reading, class discussion, and analyzing videos.
• Evaluate research: Students learn to evaluate the methodological validity of research claims, and identify ethical and practical issues in research.
• Apply sociological theories: Students learn to apply sociological theories to understand social phenomena.
• Understand social diversity: Students learn to appreciate the value and historical context of social diversity.
• Learn about sociological research: Students learn about sociological research from a theoretical and methodological perspective.
• Learn about the philosophical roots of sociological theory: Students learn about the philosophical roots of sociological theory.
• Learn about the emergence of sociology: Students learn about the influence of the Industrial and French Revolutions and other contexts that led to the emergence of sociology.
