History of the Department :
Shri Shivayogi Murughendra Swamiji Arts, Science and Commerce College Athani is a Unit of Karnataka Lingayt Education Society (K.L.E. Society) Department of Physical Education was established in 1968. It is affiliated to Rani Channamma University in 2010 it was created by upgrading Kittu Rani Channamma post graduate centre at Belagavi which was established by the Karnatak University, Dharwad in 1968.

Shri Shivayogi Murughendra Swamiji Arts, Science and Commerce College Athani is unique education institution that represents the academic and sports cultural character of KLE Society. Sports plays a crucial role in all round development of students when effective pedagogic practices from one part of good education sports enable student to lead a life of fitness and sharpen their competitive spirit. The department plays a key role in the college by conducting International yoga day National sports day, Intramural Competition, Annual Sports meet, various tournament and all the National festivals celebration. The department has well equipped play ground, modern equipments. The spacious Play Ground with 400mtr Track, Basketball Court, Handball Court, Volleyball Court, Kho-Kho Court, Kabaddi Court, Throw ball Court, Cricket Pitch. Newly contracted gymnasium, indoor Badminton Courts (4 Wooden courts) modern well equipped gym; Special facilities are provided to the meritorious Sports students are opportunity to participate at various tournaments. The development to provide over all developments of the students. It contributes to Physical Efficiency, Mental Alertness, Team Spirit, and Leadership Qualities to leading a healthy lifestyle. It inculcates the culture of sports values like cooperation, respect to others, loyalty, self-confidence, winning with grace.
